The cost of a CCTV system is one of the questions we're asked most often. And the answer — "it depends" — isn't a dodge: there are five specific factors that ultimately determine the budget. In this article we break them down one by one, so you have a realistic picture before requesting a quote.

The 5 factors that determine CCTV cost

1. Number and type of cameras

The number of cameras is the most obvious factor, but their type affects the cost just as much. A system with 4 IP 4MP dome cameras for a small shop costs very differently from a system with 16 PTZ 4K cameras for a warehouse or outdoor area.

Main camera categories and typical equipment costs:

  • Fixed dome 2-4MP: entry-level IP cameras for indoor spaces
  • Bullet 4-8MP: for outdoor areas and longer distances
  • PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom): for parking lots, warehouses or spaces needing 360° coverage
  • Fisheye / 360°: for single-camera coverage of large indoor spaces

2. Storage system (NVR or Cloud)

After the cameras, the NVR (Network Video Recorder) is the biggest hardware cost. An 8-channel NVR with a 2TB HDD differs significantly from a 32-channel one with RAID storage. Alternatively, some clients choose cloud storage, which lowers the upfront cost but introduces a monthly subscription.

3. Cabling and infrastructure

An often-overlooked cost: Cat6 or PoE cabling from camera to switch/NVR. In an existing building with suspended ceilings and hidden cable runs, installation requires significant labor time. In new construction, where cabling is done alongside other work, the cost drops considerably.

4. Management software and remote access

Most modern NVR systems come with a free mobile app for remote monitoring. For more demanding needs — multiple locations, analytics (face recognition, license plate recognition) — there are premium VMS solutions with an annual subscription.

5. Installation and configuration

Labor cost covers the coverage study, camera installation, cabling, NVR setup, mobile app configuration and user training. An 8-camera system in a small commercial space is usually completed in 1-2 working days.

What to avoid: "cheap" systems

The temptation to buy a CCTV system from an online store and install it "DIY" is understandable. However, there are often hidden pitfalls: poor corner coverage, inadequate night vision, no room to expand, or — worst case — systems with known cybersecurity vulnerabilities that expose your network.

A professional system from a certified installer comes with an operating warranty, proper configuration and after-installation support.
